Summary:

The Trauma Performance Improvement (PI) Specialist collaborates with trauma program leadership to oversee all aspects of the department’s Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) initiatives. They identify, verify, and investigate complications and events involving trauma patients, analyzing trends and guiding quality assurance activities from the pre-hospital phase through discharge. The specialist works closely with trauma teams and leadership to develop and execute action plans, ensure resolution of quality and risk issues. Their responsibilities include preparing detailed reports, educating staff, and applying continuous improvement frameworks based on current trauma best practices and American College of Surgeons standards.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Reviews trauma patients’ clinical records across the continuum of care, including EMS reports, emergency department, surgery, and inpatient documentation and informs the Trauma Program Manager of any inconsistencies in trauma audit filters.

  • Analyzes trauma data to produce both routine and ad hoc reports of statistics and PIPS filters in preparation for ACS re-verification surveys and for research purposes.

  • Assists with timely conversion, upload, and transfer of trauma registry data to designated database systems at state and national levels.

  • Identifies performance improvement issues through direct observation, concurrent chart review, and staff reporting.

  • Defines, prepares, and delivers aggregate metrics to evaluate PIPS program effectiveness through daily chart reviews and regulated event assessments including morbidity/mortality, non-surgical admissions, patient transfers, diversions, and trauma activations.

  • Analyzes trends and leads PI and quality assurance activities spanning from pre-hospital care to discharge.

  • Extracts, manipulates, and analyzes data from internal and external sources, ensuring reliable data submission to appropriate databases.

  • Contributes to the assessment, development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive staff education programs, outcome measures, and quality initiatives.

  • Maintains all components of the trauma data collection system in accordance with healthcare delivery requirements.

  • Serves in a teaching and consultative role for hospital staff, EMS personnel, community members, and other healthcare providers involved in trauma care.

  • Ensures data validity through maintained validation processes and regular feedback to registry staff on data accuracy.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

Certifications

  • Registered Nurse | North Dakota Board of Nursing (NDBON) or Compact State Agreement | Prior to Start Date | HR Primary Sources

  • Trauma Registry Course (TRC) | American Trauma Society | Within 12 Months of Start Date | HR Primary Sources

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) | American Heart Association (AHA) | Within 90 Days of Start Date | Learning Management System

Notes:

  • Must hold an unencumbered nursing license prior to start

  • Two years RN experience in health care setting required

  • Critical Care and/or Emergency Department experience preferred
