Summary:

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a perioperative registered nurse who works in collaboration with the surgeon and other health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The RNFA demonstrates the necessary knowledge, judgement, and skills specific to the expanded role of RNFA practice. These behavior practices include certain delegated medical functions that can be assumed by the RNFA. RNFA behaviors vary depending on patient populations, practice environments, service provided, accessibility of human and fiscal resources, institutional policy, and state nursing regulations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assesses, intervenes, and reassesses the patient's self-report/symptoms of pain promptly and takes appropriate action according to standard operating procedure.

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of patients in the perioperative setting in collaboration with other health care providers. Communicates plan of care with surgical team. Provides pre-op and post-op care.

  • Demonstrates a knowledge base of various procedures and surgical first assist techniques. Follows principles of sterile technique.

  • Demonstrates suturing skills including tying techniques, ligaturing vessels, wound closure and hemostasis.

  • Works collaboratively with other health care providers to provide postoperative patient management which may include participating in postoperative rounds and assisting with patient discharge planning and identifying appropriate community resources as needed.

  • Identifies and communicates unusual techniques/instruments with the operative team.

  • Participates in measuring and monitoring Quality Indicator, outcomes.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

  • Registered Nurse | North Dakota Board of Nursing (NDBON) or Compact State Agreement | Prior to Start Date | HR Primary Sources

  • Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) | National Institute of First Assisting (NISA) | Prior to Start Date | Employee Provides HR a Copy

  • Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) | Competency & Credentialing Institute | Preferred | Employee Provides HR a Copy

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) | American Heart Association (AHA) | Within 90 Days of Start Date | Learning Management System

Notes

  • Must hold an unencumbered nursing license prior to start.

  • Position will be credentialed through Altru Health System’s credentialing process
