Summary:

The Polysomnographic Technologist performs polysomnography therapies such as CPAP, BPAP, ASV, IVAPS and O2 therapy.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Selects evaluation and assessment methods which correlate to the patient diagnosis, symptoms, and physician orders and documents according to Sleep Disorders Center policies and procedures. Ensures health history is completed and reviews patient medical records.

  • Follows procedural protocols (positive airway pressure [PAP] and oxygen titration) to ensure collection of appropriate data and follows "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates).

  • Identifies significant changes or high risk situations in patient's condition and takes appropriate actions, as evidence in reporting, consultation and documentation. Communicates pertinent information to appropriate caregivers.

  • Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact free and makes adjustments as necessary. Documents routine observation, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.

  • Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards and performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and makes adjustments, if necessary. Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and makes adjustments, if necessary. Disassembles, cleans and assembles Sleep Disorders Center equipment and performs preventive maintenance according to standard operating procedure.

  • Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, and oxygen administration). Performs routine positive pressure (PAP) mask fitting.

  • Processes patient charges and performs data transfer.

  • Provides appropriate patient education and family teaching.

  • Performs pain assessment and takes appropriate action according to standard operating procedure.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

Certifications:

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) | North Dakota State Board of Respiratory Care | Prior to Start Date | HR Primary Sources

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) | American Heart Association (AHA) | Within 90 days of Start Date | Learning Management System

Notes:

  • Upon hire, will be required to enroll in the Accredited Sleep Technologist Education Program (A-STEP).

  • Tech will be expected to complete the A-STEP modules and become Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) within two years of hire.
