Summer Job: Wastewater Utility Worker — City of Grand Forks

The City of Grand Forks is hiring a seasonal Wastewater Utility Worker to join our team this summer. You'll work alongside experienced mechanics and operators, helping keep our water and wastewater systems running smoothly — mowing, painting, maintenance, equipment operation, and more. No two days look the same.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:

  1. Assist mechanics with clean-up of shop, repair activities, heavy lifting, welding, bending and painting metal containers.
  2. Perform a variety of building maintenance and grounds work including custodial work, mowing, painting hydrants, and other general maintenance activities.
  3. Assist water and wastewater/stormwater service workers, water and wastewater treatment operators, related to general operation and maintenance duties of the water and wastewater systems.

Typical Qualifications

  • QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
  • Knowledge: Occupational hazards and standard safety practices related to the operation of a wide variety of light to medium equipment. Techniques and methods of equipment maintenance and minor repair.
  • Abilities: Learn to operate a variety of light to heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner. Learn to perform container maintenance and repair. Learn department policies and procedures. Perform arduous tasks for extended periods of time in all types of weather. Perform preventative maintenance and minor repair of a wide variety of light to heavy equipment. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others. Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
One year of equipment operation and maintenance experience is desirable
Education or Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Field/shop and/or landfill environment; travel from site to site; work around heavy equipment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, potentially hazardous chemicals, waste, and infectious materials; inclement weather conditions. Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate lifting; walking, standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized equipment and vehicles; general manual dexterity.
