Purpose of Position

The NATURE (Nurturing American Tribal Undergraduate Research and Education) University Summer Camp Student Mentor will work, as a team, with up to 20 Tribal College and University (TCU) student participants attending the NATURE University Summer Camp. This camp introduces participants to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines and career opportunities while simultaneously being introduced to campus and city life. The student mentors will assist participants as they tour lab spaces, work with faculty, and prepare for research presentations in the STEM area participants selected for research work.
TCU Students will be coming from the following Tribal Colleges/areas: Cankdeska Cikana Community College, Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College, Sitting Bull College, and Turtle Mountain Community College. Mentors will report to the ND EPSCoR Tribal Partnerships Manager as well as Associate Coordinators of NATURE University Summer Camp.
A short orientation will be held during the week of May 25. The camp will be held June 1 – 12. Hours are determined by orientation/training needs and schedules of TCU student participants, not to exceed 40 hours/week.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • The mentor tasks include:
    • Assist TCU student participants
      • Acclimate to college campus and urban setting
      • Transport participants to research labs and other activities on/off campus
      • Engage in social activities
    • Assist in administering NATURE University Summer Camp activities
      • Work with camp coordinators to ensure that Camp activities are implemented
    • Other Duties as assigned
      • One or more student mentors will be scheduled to stay in the dorm each night with camp participants
      • Work closely with other mentors
      • Undergo trainings (camp orientation, state fleet vehicle training, safety training)
    • Customer Service
      • At all times, model respectful behavior to students, staff, faculty, guests and fellow mentors
    • Work Safety
      • As covered in training, work safely and help to create and provide a safe working environment for students, staff, faculty, guests and fellow mentors

Required Competencies

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and with other mentors

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be available during the May 25 – June 12 timeframe
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to qualify for use of ND Fleet Vehicles. Will need to transport student participants in a ND Fleet Vehicle to and from camp activities on and off campus.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

  • Knowledge of Tribal Colleges and Universities and/or indigenous communities
  • STEM field experience
