Salary/Position Classification

  • $55,000+ Annual, Dependent upon experience, Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime)
  • 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm
  • This position will work onsite within Grand Forks, ND campus. No overnight travel.

Purpose of Position

Perform HVAC/R Systems Technician duties as assigned by the HVAC/R Systems Shop Supervisor in support of the University of North Dakota’s academic, residential, research, and support facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems
    • Service, install, maintain, and repair campus HVAC and mechanical systems, including furnaces, boilers, circulation pumps, dampers, control valves, coils, and heat exchangers/converters in academic, residential, and support facilities.
    • Operate power tools, hand tools, and diagnostic equipment to service fan coil units, unit heaters, and other terminal equipment across campus buildings.
    • Service, installation, and troubleshoot electric, electronic, and/or pneumatic control systems, including actuators and damper motors, in coordination with campus building automation systems.
    • Interpret mechanical and electrical schematics, sequences of operation, and control drawings to diagnose and resolve system and equipment issues.
    • Service and install heat pumps; chilled water and glycol systems; water- and air-cooled condensing units; compressors; dehumidifiers; rooftop units; and mini-split heat pump systems supporting a wide range of campus facilities.
  • Refrigeration Systems Service/Installation and Recovery
    • Service, install, maintain, and repair walk-in and reach-in coolers and freezers, as well as ice machines, supporting dining, research, residential, and auxiliary campus operations.
    • Properly handle, recover, and dispose of refrigerants in accordance with EPA regulations and university environmental and safety policies. Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of refrigerant usage, recovery, and inventory for compliance and reporting purposes.
  • Water Treatment Systems Service and Maintenance
    • Service, maintain, and monitor water treatment systems for closed- and open-loop cooling towers serving campus facilities.
    • System loops include hot water, chilled water, heat pump, and glycol systems, ensuring proper operation, system efficiency, asset protection, and compliance with university standards.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • One year HVAC/R experience
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Successful completion of a Standard Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree in HVAC or one (1) year HVAC certification.
  • Experience with Asset Works or similar computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Experience working with chillers.
  • Experience with air and hydronic system balancing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
