Salary/Position Classification

  • This is a 12-month appointment with an 80% administrative assignment as Director of Faculty Development, or the equivalent, during the academic year.
  • 100% administrative appointment with stipend to cover May 16-August 15.
  • The remaining 20% effort during the academic year will be directed to the home department and/or college/school.
  • Faculty currently holding administrative roles, including department chair, associate dean, or program director, may apply; however, the selected candidate must step down from any administrative role prior to assuming the position.
  • This role is designed as an on-campus, in-person position to support collaboration and engagement with faculty and campus partners. Hybrid or remote work arrangements are not available.

Purpose of Position

The Director of Faculty Development provides vision, leadership, and coordination for institution-wide faculty development initiatives that support faculty success across the career lifespan.

The Director designs and implements programs that support new faculty onboarding and mentoring, as well as sustained growth and renewal for mid- and late-career faculty. The role also provides programming to support faculty in special appointments (non-tenure track faculty) as well as programming related to faculty wellbeing and leadership development.

Reporting to the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, the Director of Faculty Development collaborates closely with the Teaching Transformation and Development Academy (TTaDA); deans and department chairs; and other campus partners to strengthen faculty success in alignment with institutional priorities and the UND LEADS strategic plan.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership of Faculty Development at UND
    • Provide strategic leadership for faculty development initiatives that support faculty success across the career lifecycle.
    • Identify emerging needs and trends in faculty development and recommend initiatives to support and strengthen faculty success at UND.
    • Ensure that faculty development initiatives reflect the diversity of faculty appointment types and disciplinary contexts across the university.
    • Partner with deans and department chairs to align faculty development initiatives with college and departmental priorities and to strengthen support for faculty success across academic units.
    • Assess the effectiveness of faculty development initiatives and use feedback and participation data to inform program improvement.
    • Represent UND in relevant regional and national faculty development conversations and networks, as appropriate. -
  • Early-Career Faculty Success and Onboarding
    • Provide leadership for UND’s new faculty mentoring and onboarding initiatives.
    • Direct the Alice T. Clark mentoring programs (first-year and second-year) and New Faculty Orientation. Assist with the clinical faculty mentoring program.
    • Develop and sustain a cohesive UND new faculty “first-year experience” that supports early-career faculty success and integration into the university community.
    • Partner with colleges and departments to strengthen mentoring practices and ensure alignment with institutional goals for faculty success.
  • Faculty Development and Leadership Initiatives
    • Design and lead programming that supports faculty development across the career lifecycle, including mid- and late-career faculty.
    • Develop initiatives that promote faculty wellbeing, professional vitality, and sustained engagement with the university community.
    • Create programming to support the professional development and inclusion of special appointment faculty.
    • Partner with campus units to expand opportunities for faculty professional development and leadership preparation. -
  • Campus Partnerships and Collaboration
    • Build and sustain partnerships across campus to support faculty development and success, connecting faculty with campus initiatives and resources related to teaching excellence and research and scholarly/creative activity.
    • Collaborate with TTaDA on pedagogical book reads, the May teaching workshop, AI across the curriculum, and other pedagogical programming.
    • Serve as an ex officio member of the Faculty Instructional Development Committee (FIDC).
    • Engage in additional campus outreach and collaboration (e.g., Chester Fritz Library, Office of Research and Economic Development, the School of Graduate Studies) to coordinate and strengthen faculty development efforts.
    • Partner with deans and departments on faculty recognition initiatives, including internal awards and efforts to strengthen nominations for national fellowships and awards.
    • Promote awareness of faculty development opportunities and encourage broad participation across colleges and schools.

Minimum Requirements

  • Tenured faculty member at UND, or associate or full special appointment faculty member at UND.
  • Faculty Development and Mentoring
    • Demonstrated experience in faculty development and/or mentoring at the departmental, college, or university level

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Higher Education Landscape
    • Demonstrate understanding of faculty roles and appointments (on campus and online), promotion, tenure processes, shared governance, and the evolving demands of teaching, research, scholarship and creative activity, and service.
  • Program Design and Evaluation Expertise
    • Experience using evidence-based practices and pedagogical knowledge to develop, assess, and continuously improve programs for faculty in various career stages (early, mid, and late career) and appointment types, including leadership development, mentoring, and career transition support.
  • Strategic Leadership Skills
    • Experience setting vision and strategic direction for faculty development initiatives, aligning programs with institutional priorities, and managing complex projects.
  • Communication and Collaboration
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience leading workshops, facilitating discussions, and engaging diverse faculty audiences. Record of working with academic leaders, faculty, and administrative or academic units to build partnerships and foster a culture of professional growth.
