Purpose of Position

This is a part-time, non-benefited position. Only UND students are eligible to be hired in this position.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • STEM Ambassadors conduct hands-on activities with North Dakota students, families, and communities.
    • Their duties can include K-12 classroom visits and informal education events (library outreach, family nights, science festivals, girl/boy scout activities, etc.).
    • Students must be comfortable securing their own outreach events and confident to visit schools.
    • STEM Ambassadors will work individually, with other STEM Ambassadors, and with the NDSGC team, depending on the type of community engagement event.
    • STEM Ambassadors can also staff the reception desk of the NDSGC offices, assist with educator workshops, schedules NDSGC social media posts, and develop K-12 lesson plans.
    • STEM Ambassadors must visit the UND campus and attend a training session at the start of the fall semester. All majors are welcome to apply!
  • STEM Outreach and Education:
    • Act as a positive role model and advocate for STEM subjects, encouraging students to explore STEM fields through school visits, workshops, and interactive learning experiences.
    • Develop and deliver engaging STEM presentations, activities, and hands-on demonstrations to various audiences, making STEM topics accessible and fun.
    • Coordinate STEM outreach events such as school visits, hands-on workshops, career days, and STEM career fairs and local community events.
    • Create and share STEM-related content (e.g., videos, blog posts, social media updates) to inspire and engage a broader audience.
    • Use social media platforms to engage students, parents, educators, and the public in discussions about STEM topics and careers.
  • Administrative Support:
    • Assist with event logistics, scheduling, and coordination for STEM outreach activities.
    • Maintain accurate records of outreach events, attendance, and participant feedback.
    • Report regularly to the North Dakota Space Grant leadership on outreach outcomes, key insights, and areas for improvement.
    • Collaborate with the NDSGC team to develop promotional materials for STEM events, outreach programs, and initiatives. -

Minimum Requirements

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with diverse groups (students, faculty, and community members).
  • Motivated, reliable, and responsible, with a strong sense of initiative and dedication to the role.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with a positive attitude towards collaboration and outreach.
  • Interest in STEM, education, or community engagement.
  • Ability to work a minimum of 10 hours per pay period (2-weeks) or commit to 3 outreach events per month (whichever is preferable for the candidates schedule).
  • Flexible and willing to participate in outreach events, office work, and activities during weekdays, evenings, or weekends as required.
  • Be enrolled at an NDSGC affiliate institution (https://ndspacegrant.und.edu/about/affiliate-members.html) in good academic standing for both Fall 2026 and Spring 2027.
  • Must be a college sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student actively enrolled in classes for the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 academic terms.
  • Be a U.S. Persons, due to grant requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in community outreach, event planning, or volunteer work is a plus, but not required.
