Purpose of Position
The Division of Research & Economic Development (VPRED) seeks a Temporary Part-Time Web Design & Accessibility Specialist to support the redesign, modernization, and accessibility compliance of VPRED websites and digital communications as part of the University of North Dakota’s Web Brand Refresh initiative.
This position will collaborate with VPRED, Marketing & Communications, the Title IX Office, and University Information Technology (UIT) to ensure web content aligns with university branding, accessibility standards, governance policies, and stakeholder needs.
The role will conduct accessibility testing, remediation, and quality assurance activities to ensure compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA and UND accessibility standards. Responsibilities include accessibility audits, remediation coordination, and support for web content strategy, user experience improvements, and ongoing website quality assurance within the university’s established web infrastructure and standards.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Web Development & Modernization
- Support the redesign and modernization of VPRED websites in alignment with the UND Web Brand Refresh initiative.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and university partners to review and enhance existing web content, functionality, and user experience.
- Troubleshoot and maintain existing websites and identify areas for accessibility, usability, and structural improvement.
- Assist with development and integration of reusable components and visual elements within the UND web framework and content management system.
- Support web-based applications, dynamic content, forms, reporting tools, and other digital communication needs related to divisional operations.
- Document required functionality, project updates, workflows, and implementation processes to support timely and effective delivery of solutions.
- Understand common web application and content management system constraints and apply appropriate design and accessibility solutions.
- User Interface, UX & Accessibility Compliance
- Conduct comprehensive accessibility audits and remediation of websites, web applications, and digital materials.
- Perform automated and manual accessibility testing to ensure compliance with ADA, Section 508, WCAG 2.1 AA standards, and university accessibility guidelines.
- Analyze existing websites and applications to identify accessibility barriers and opportunities for improvement.
- Implement accessible design and coding practices including semantic HTML, alternative text, keyboard navigation, and ARIA roles where appropriate.
- Optimize compatibility with assistive technologies including screen readers and related accessibility tools.
- Collaborate with UND Marketing & Communications and UIT to ensure compliance with university web governance, accessibility, and branding standards.
- Monitor, test, and optimize website usability, performance, and cross-browser/cross-platform compatibility.
- Apply quality assurance standards to evaluate accessibility, usability, functionality, and effectiveness of web deliverables.
- Serve as an advocate for accessibility, user experience, and inclusive digital design practices.
- Digital Marketing & Communications Support
- Assist with the redesign and standardization of digital marketing materials, presentations, graphics, downloadable resources, and related communications assets.
- Develop reusable visual elements such as templates, web graphics, icons, illustrations, and multimedia content for divisional web and marketing initiatives.
- Support consistent branding and messaging across VPRED digital platforms while adhering to UND brand standards.
- Work collaboratively with Marketing & Communications to extend UND branding standards to divisional web properties and related applications.
- Research and apply SEO, analytics, and usability best practices to improve stakeholder engagement and visibility.
- Content Management System Support
- Assist with building & maintaining systems supporting delivery of digital content through UND’s content management system.
- Coordinate with university teams and external partners to ensure design, usability, accessibility, and content standards are consistently implemented.
- Support content migration, page restructuring, and navigation improvements within VPRED web properties.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Document accessibility improvements, remediation efforts, and implementation processes.
- Generate accessibility and compliance reports detailing identified issues, remediation progress, compliance levels, and recommended actions.
- Create and maintain documentation for workflows, accessibility procedures, web standards, and related support materials.
- Assist with transition documentation and knowledge transfer for divisional staff responsible for ongoing website maintenance.

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in graphic design, Web Design, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
- Experience working with websites, content management systems, or digital communications platforms.
- Experience with web accessibility standards and guidelines, such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) developed by the W3C.
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in higher education, government, or similarly regulated environments.
- Familiarity with enterprise CMS platforms such as Modern Campus Omni CMS or similar systems.
- Knowledge of responsive web design, UI/UX principles, and accessibility-focused development practices.
- Experience using accessibility testing and QA tools.
- Experience with SEO, analytics, and digital marketing best practices.
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or related web technologies.
- Familiarity with Git, source control, or web development workflows.
- Experience implementing ADA and web accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines.
