- This position will work onsite the Grand Forks, ND campus.
Purpose of Position
The purpose of the position is to provide academic advisement, recruitment, and retention to undergraduate students at the University of North Dakota. This position helps to advise any/all undergraduate majors and minors. Academic advisors help to serve the needs of the Academic Advising Manager team as well as any unmet student needs across campus. Academic advisors will utilize various academic advising tools and technologies to advise and interact with students regularly. Advisors will attend academic advising events along with student success programming including commencement ceremonies.
Duties & Responsibilities
Academic Advising and Student Success
- Provide comprehensive academic, degree planning, and career advising to undergraduate and graduate students in both on-campus and online programs.
- Meet with students through scheduled appointments and drop-in advising to support academic planning, goal setting, and student success.
- Advise new and transfer students during orientation, registration, and transition to the University.
- Maintain ongoing communication with assigned students to promote engagement, persistence, and timely degree completion.
- Develop a thorough understanding of degree requirements, curriculum, and academic pathways to provide accurate and effective guidance.
- Apply student-centered advising approaches that address the needs of diverse student populations.
- Collaborate with academic departments and campus partners to support student success initiatives and address advising needs.
- Participate in advising assessment and continuous improvement efforts.
- Serve as a reference and prepare letters of recommendation for students, as appropriate.
Student Support and Resource Navigation
- Interpret and communicate university, college, and program policies, procedures, deadlines, and academic requirements.
- Guide students through academic processes, including registration, major changes, petitions, withdrawals, graduation applications, readmission, and related procedures.
- Assist students in understanding academic expectations and institutional resources that support retention and degree completion.
- Provide basic guidance regarding financial aid processes and connect students with appropriate campus offices when additional expertise is needed.
- Integrate career exploration into advising by utilizing career assessment tools, career planning resources, and experiential learning opportunities.
- Connect students with campus services and support resources to address academic, personal, and professional needs.
- Utilize student information systems, advising technologies, learning management systems, and other institutional platforms to document advising interactions and support student success.
Student Engagement and Professional Development
- Participate in orientation, commencement, recruitment, and other student-centered events throughout the academic year.
- Support Experiential Learning Center initiatives and advising outreach activities.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current on advising practices, higher education trends, student development, and institutional resources.
- Collaborate with advising colleagues to provide continuity of service during staff absences and periods of increased demand.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelors Degree
- Experience in an academic or professional setting
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
